We were humbled to receive such abundant thanks for our work during the partial government shutdown. We received some lovely messages and local media coverage. Follow the links below to view.
Feeding America Southwest Virginia saw increased requests for food assistance as the government shutdown became the longest in history. And Southwest Virginia is indeed home to federal employees who were either furloughed or asked to work without pay.
What did FASWVA do to help?
Feeding America Southwest Virginia is actively responded to unpaid federal workers requesting assistance in a variety of ways. We provided boxes of shelf-stable food via special direct distributions to help alleviate immediate food needs.
We partnered with the AFGE union local 448 and Kroger to complete a distribution of 50 boxes of food TSA employees at the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport who were affected by the shutdown.
We also worked with USP Lee in Pennington Gap, Virginia, to provide 210 food boxes to prison employees who were working without pay. This distribution was generously supported by Food City and FASWVA donors. During the distribution, food for volunteers was provided by the Pennington Gap Hardees and Subway stores. Heaters to combat the frigid temperatures were provided by Myers Home Center in Jonesville.
