Feeding America Southwest Virginia was founded in 1981 and proudly commemorates 35 years of fighting hunger and changing lives through community partnerships.
The Food Bank is an affiliate member of Feeding America and for the last three decades the Food Bank’s ultimate mission has remained the same: eliminate hunger in the region.
The primary function of the Food Bank is to secure large quantities of food for the hungry. Over $31 million worth of food and grocery related products are channeled through a network of 373 partner feeding programs in our 26-county, 9 city region that provide food or meals to those in need.
The Need for Food Banks
The Food Bank is an essential service to our communities, yet, it is often overlooked. It is difficult for many of us to believe, accept, or admit that hungry people exist in today’s society …in our hometowns…and even in our neighborhoods. But hunger studies continue to document that need. The USDA estimates that 48.1 million Americans lived in food insecure households, including 32.8 million adults and 15.3 million children.
Many circumstances contribute to an inadequate food supply. It may be short term because of the loss of a job or long term because of inadequate fixed incomes or terminal or acute illness. Whatever the reason, hunger does exist in our region and the mission of the Food Bank is to strive to meet that basic need. This region of Southwest Virginia has also been hard hit by plant closings, work force reductions, limited job opportunities and constraints to job re-training opportunities.
The nutritional needs of thousands of families in Southwest Virginia rests with the Food Bank and its partner agencies.
