Feeding America Southwest Virginia’s Cafe to Grow children’s food truck URGENTLY needs volunteers to feed kids this summer!
Cafe to Grow goes to various neighborhoods and a summer camp to provide fresh, hot meals to kids for free. However, we need the help of our volunteers to prepare the meals and serve them off the truck. There are two ways that you can help us this summer:
Help Prepare Meals – we will be preparing meals every weekday out of the new Culinary Arts Training Kitchen at the Community Solutions Center located at 2328 Melrose Ave NW, Roanoke, VA 24017.
We will need 4-6 volunteers each day to help us prepare between 400 and 700 meals a day! The shifts are from 12:30pm to 3:30pm Monday through Friday at 2328 Melrose Ave NW.
Help Serve Meals – we will be taking the meals out on the food truck to 4 community sites in the Roanoke area. We need the help of 4 or more volunteers to meet the food truck at those sites and help serve the meals to hungry kids. We have created two shifts for the meal service. Individuals and groups may take one of the shifts or sign up for both shifts.
1st Route – 11:45am to 2:00pm (2.25 hours) -Volunteers will meet at the Boys & Girls Club located at 1714 9th Street SE (please park at the 7-11) and then follow the truck to Tinker Creek Manor Townhomes located at 2050 Tinker Dr., NE.
2nd Route – 2:15pm to 5:00pm (2.75 hours) – Volunteers will meet at the Villages of Garst Creek located at 4356 Garst Mill Rd., SW near the swimming pool and then follow the truck to Ashton Heights Apartments located at 3530 Dona Dr., NW.
This summer we are also looking for groups that would like volunteer on Fridays and participate in a Friday Funday. This would be a chance for your group to bring more than 4 volunteers and plan a short 20-30 minute activity to participate in with the children we serve.
Suggestions might be – blowing bubbles, playing with sidewalk chalk, bringing dessert, coloring or any other fun activity with our kids. We have found many of the children we serve do not have the opportunity to participate in fun activities during the summer due to limited resources. They enjoy spending time with our volunteers and doing something a little different from time-to-time. If you would be interested in this and have more questions, please feel free to call Liz Quintana at 540-342-3011 ext., 7023 or Amy Morgan at 540-342-3011 ext. 7041. Some Fridays have already been reserved.
All volunteers must be 16 years of age or older. Dress code for all volunteers includes closed toed shoes. In addition, we do allow shorts to be worn, but ask that they are no more than 4” above the knee. For Cafe to Grow, please allow that the truck may be delayed for 10-15 minutes from scheduled time due to traffic delays.
To sign up, please visit our volunteer page on our website located at: https://faswva.volunteerhub.com/. In the grey box at the top, you can choose “Café-to-Grow” to see the spots available. Please register each person in your group individually. If you are planning on bringing more people, you can contact Liz Quintana at 540-342-3011 ext. 7023 or Barb Putney at 540-342-3011 ext. 7011 to let them know.
Thank you for your interest and we look forwarding to seeing you this summer!
