Mobile food pantry to help serve those in need
TriCities.Com - February 15, 2012 - by James Shea

Rather than buy his wife flowers for Valentine’s Day, Keith Norton took a different approach – he donated $1,200 to Feeding America Southwest Virginia.

Norton is a Feeding America board member and the money will be used to purchase food to stock the non-profit’s new mobile food pantry. Feeding America recently purchased a $155,000 refrigerated truck, which will provide food assistance at eight sites in Buchanan, Dickenson, Washington and Grayson counties.

“Our focus has been to reach every individual who lacks a food supply,” said Pamela Irvine, Feeding America Southwest Virginia president and CEO.

The United Company Foundation donated $250,000 to launch the program.

Michelle Stamper, mobile food pantry site coordinator, said Grayson County has 2,431 people who live below the poverty line, many of them children. The county has two food pantries, but the facilities are often inaccessible to those who live in the remote areas of the county.

Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour Awards Local Charities
By ROB LYON Smith Mountain Eagle - February 1, 2012

Bill Piatt, the head of the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour, referred to last week’s selection of the 2012 charities as a “job lottery.”

“This is not a typical lottery where the winner passively receives some prize,” Piatt explained.  “The eight selected charities will embark upon a nine-month effort to plan, staff and execute the Tour.”

The charities chosen at Thursday’s drawing are:  Smith Mountain Lake Good Neighbors, Lake Christian Ministries, Bedford Pregnancy Center, Helping Hands of Franklin County, CASA of Central Virginia, Southern Virginia Child Advocacy Center, STEP, Inc. and Bedford Hospice House.  Alternates are:  Feeding America Southwest Virginia and Free Clinic of Central Virginia.

A letter to the editor: Hunger Exists in America
Feeding America Blog - January 31, 2012

Howard G. Buffett joins Feeding America President and CEO Vicki Escarra in this response to the Wall Street Journal’s recent article, The Myth of the Starving Americans. As of today, this response has not yet been accepted for publication by the Wall Street Journal.

To The Editor:

The Myth of Starving Americans by Warren Kozak (Jan.30, 2012) is astonishingly biased and potentially harmful.

As a national network of food banks on the front lines of hunger on a daily basis, it is inconceivable that anyone would question that hunger exists in America. Not only does it exist, it is present in every state and every county across our nation. While we can all agree that jobs are the best solution to hunger, millions of families are still hurting from the worst recession in decades and for many, job opportunities remain few and far between.

Kozak cherry-picks his facts and figures in an attempt to prove allegations that are inaccurate and mean-spirited:  that federal government programs waste billions of dollars providing food to people that are not really in need of help, and that fraud and abuse are rampant.
